Day 03: Segara Anak Lake and Hot springs (2008m) – Senaru Crater Rim(2.641m)
On day three we got to wake up to this stunning lake with baby volcaon Baru Jari in it, and we got to enjoy the hot springs. Heavenly…
After lunch time we left the lake and went up to the crater Rim of Senaru. We walked for 3 hours up this route, a steep and stony way up to the summit. Here were some more great views over the lake and Baru Jari.
We spent our last night here, before hiking the last part down through some lush forests on day 4.
An absolute amazing hike with some of the most stunning views I have ever got to see. So happy we did this in 4 days. There is a 3 day trek but then you do not get to spend the night dawn by the lake and the hot springs. Which would be a total miss out!!
Day 02: Sembalun Crater Rim(2.639m) – Summit/Top 3.726m – Segara Anak Lake and Hot springs (2008m).
We woke up at 02:30 am and had some light breakfast, then leave at 03:00 am we started the trek to Rinjani Summit (3726 m). Walking time approximate 3 hours and 20 minutes. The first stage is a moderate climb for 120 minutes, while the second stage is a fairly easy but long trek. The last hour is very steep and difficult. (There are many loose stones, and as you take two steps forward you will slip one step back). From the Summit, you can see all of Lombok island, Bali, Sumbawa and Segara Anak Lake. Such a pity it was so cloudy! After sunrise went down to the Sembalun crater rim and had a hot breakfast.
After breakfast and a rest, we went down to the lake and hot spring. The trail down is very steep and slippery, we needed 3 hours to get down to the level of the lake and hot spring. The lunch was provided by the lake and hot spring just 100m walk from the lake. Then we explored the lake and swam in the hot springs to soak and heal our skin. See the next post for images of this heavenly place.
Day 1 of 4: Sembalun Village (1.150.m) – Sembalun Crater Rim (2.639.m).
A four day trek always starts with day 1. Starting at 1150 meter of elevation in Sembalun village, we walked up about 1500m of elevation in one day to the Sembalun Crater Rim. With my good friend Kate Crompton, who amazingly decided to join me on this big power endurance mission only a week before our adventure. Respect lady. It was tough.
Addy was our guide for the whole trek, joined by 4 more porters who are crazy skilled walking this trail on flip-flops and each carrying a bamboo pole with two baskets attached that balances off one shoulder. These hold all our food, cooking and camping gear for our group of 4 and guide. Kate, myself, Tenile, Jon & Addy. To see these guys walking like this was absolutely amazing.
Pos 2 (Tengengean) at 1500m elevation. So far so good. Beautiful views and easy walking. The weather was great. Dry but not too warm.
We had a lunch break at Pos 3 (Pada Balong ) 1800 m. After which we started a much steeper trail.
After lunch and a rest, we continue to heading Sembalun Crater Rim (Pelawangan Sembalun) 2639M, walking time 3 hours including a prolonged steep climb. We camped the night at Sembalun Crater Rim.
The end of day 1.

Visiting abandoned buildings is something I used to do a lot, but haven’t done in years. Revisiting an old favorite for the third time (Chateau Miranda, Winter Camping) was an absolute treat. It was so nice to walk around this beauty, even though it’s state of decay is getting worse over the years. Especially the balustrades that made it’s staircase so special, have completely fallen to pieces.
It felt like a homecoming to walk around here again, and feeling so familiar, after so long. Maybe it’s time to start doing this again. I guess I once stopped visiting abandoned places because I thought I had already seen the most beautiful place I would ever see (this gorgeous thing, in my memory the amazing), and that every other place would not live up to it. But I have been missing the feeling you get when walking around an area you are not really meant to be, and where you can only imagine the history of the place before it was left to be forgotten. And apparently, I still enjoy taking photographs of these places, even if its a place I have seen often before. So let’s see if I pick up this old hobby of mine again in the new year :).
